The pop-off cover is easier to remove and put back on. Once you have the lid off, you can pull out a hard drive to swap one for any reason. One of my favorite things about Synology drives is the toolless setup. Two LAN ports, on the other hand, are potentially useful for anyone with a managed network switch or a dual-port network adapter.
It steps from an Intel Celeron J dual-core 2. Synology took a good thing and just swapped in the modern equivalent of the hardware. That means this NAS is a little more powerful and yet a little more power efficient than its predecessor.
How does that translate in real life? I set it to copy overnight and woke up in the morning to everything in place. Playing videos work well, and getting to my data is quick enough that I have no complaints. The NAS is technically capable of transcoding for Plex, but the nature of its Atom processor does limit it to less complicated p videos. Some of my high-end Blu-ray quality videos stuttered.
As soon as I swapped to using my standard Plex hardware and the NAS as just storage location for the videos, everything went smoothly. But if you want something even higher quality, you might want to let some other hardware handle the Plex server duties while the NAS only holds your files. Something like transcoding might require separate hardware to provide more oomph. All you can do is either add a 2 GB or 4 GB stick to the slot you can access in the hard drive bay. The other disappointments are omissions.
But, getting SSD bays likely calls for a redesign, and thus, a price hike. Synology software is easy to use and easy to learn. From there, the software practically does all the work for you. I set this NAS up in less than 10 minutes. Then it was just a matter of loading my files. When it came time to access my files, I never felt like I was waiting short of attempting to stream high-end 4K Plex files. It is limited to two bays, so keep that in mind.
If you want more failure backup or more storage space, you might want to opt for a four or five-bay NAS. But those cost more, and you still need to factor in the hard drives which you buy separately. Best Gadgets for Pet Owners. Best Sustainable Tech. Best Tech for Managing Stress and Anxiety.

How would I setup the first drive initially, and then setup the second drive later to achieve that? Hi Bruce, I am already working on a new tutorial and it will be published soon. Right now you can use the 12TB drive and later you can create a new volume to get full capacity.
During insital setup I am getting error of not able to format drive, using brand new 4TB Seagate Ironwolf drive. How it fix this issue, or do I need to replace my drive, its DOA. Thank you for these nice instructions. How can I do this? Hi Pedro, You need to add the second hard drive to the storage pool.
Make a note that, the capacity of the hard drive you are adding must be equal to or larger than the primary drive in the storage pool. To add a drive to a storage pool. Now, Go to the Storage Pool page and select the storage pool you want to expand. Select the newly inserted drive. Follow the wizard to finish the process. Thanks for this guide. I have 1 question. I suppose to have 10TB in total. Why does this happen? Is there any way I can get 10TB?
HI Laili, thanks for reaching out. For this, you need to remove the storage pool and created a new one without SHR This will delete all data stored in the hard drive. Very helpful article as I consider purchasing DS How would I create two volumes — one for file storage for music and photos, another for Apple Time Machine backup?
Hi Bill, You can create multiple storage volumes. Check out this official KB from Synology. I also need to be able to take a photo of a receipt on my phone and then upload to a particular file on the drive and then have this uploaded photo available to me on my PCs.
Check out this official post from Synology to create an SHR storage pool that can sustain one drive failure. I may write a dedicated post with detailed steps in the coming days. You can use Synology Drive as an alternative to Google Drive. It works almost the same as Google Drive. To backup photos captured on your phone, check out this article. Thank you, for your web page I wish I saw it 6 hours ago, something this simple and direct needs to be part of each NAS device Synology has on their site, instead of 50 googles and site searches.
Very useful information as this is my first NAS I really needed this information to get me started. SHR is easy to set up and allows you to mix the drive capacities. SHR allows for 1-disk or 2-disk worth of redundancy. This means, the SHR volume can suffer up to two disks lost, and the data volume will still be available for use. Many thanks Satwik for a really comprehensive and easy to follow guide. You really helped a novice! I find so many guides often miss out a section which throws the set up, but your screen shots were immensely helpful.
I am so glad! Thank you so much for your kind words Mark. Seems very straight forward step by step instructions. I have a question. Can I use the same volume to storage my files and also another one for surveillance cameras? I know this device have the capability for handle IP cameras so I wonder if I can allocate 1tb only for the surveillance recording and the rest of an 8tb disk I have for my personal files?
Finally, I have a doubt, once I have the volume created I just connect my external hdd to the synology and start copying over my folder structure there or what is recommended to keep my info photos, videos, files organized? Hi Erick, Glad you liked the article. If you keep your files organized, it will help you find a specific file Ex. Else just copy the files from Hard Disk as is and use the Synology Universal Search to find the required files.

However, there is still plenty of similarities. For a start, we still find a single rear-mounted fan that can be adjusted automatically or manually by the end-user, which works in conjunction with the passive cooling throughout the chassis. Once again, this very much plays into the rhetoric of the brand and its priority of a seamless network and internet level access, not really seeing market demand for HDMI and stand-alone general access.
Previous generations of Synology NAS in this product family i. I can certainly see the logic behind removing the eSATA port, given that Synology state this hardware level is not considered sufficient for utilising the DX expansion as anything more than external storage, but the inclusion of a second network port is definitely welcome, as well as particularly good news for those with managed switch environments and better than average ISP routers can take advantage of it.
ThiS is also going to be good news to those with WiFi 6 routers that are beginning to arrive with dedicated 2. Introducing a LAG enabled NAS into a network with open up the available file access to multiple users at once achieving higher speeds compared with what they would see one shared 1Gbe NAS connection to the network. The importance of an additional 1Gbe LAN Port is clear to anyone with a managed network switch or a dual-port network adapter on their client system.
Other releases in the diskstation range from Synology have all featured two 1Gbe LAN ports, but whereas there are still a few outcries of a lack of 2. Below are the core specifications:. Both feature an Intel Celeron dual-core processor that supports both p and 4K playback. Thanks to embedding graphics featured on this processor HD UHD Graphics , there is is a good level of transcoding support possible natively as well as in Plex, but slightly less so.
Notwithstanding the fact that this CPU has as official support of upto 8GB of memory maximum, it seems an odd choice to pair different capacities of memory within a single device. There is not anything intrinsically wrong or damaging in pairing contrasting memory capacity, it just seems an odd choice to make from such a slick company as Synology. This may well be related to users who purchased the previous generation NAS and installed unofficial memory that exceeded the recommended maximum previously and in efforts to ensure system stability, perhaps they created this limitation.
However, that is pure speculation from me! Single Module available inside the bay area. What this means is that if you look at the resource monitor when the device boots, it is caching more data in the memory than it technically needs to.
This is not a bad thing though, as when the memory is needed for applications and services, it is near-instantly flushed by the reserved system area. Internally, with the exception of the rear fan, there are are no moving parts and practically no wires. The internal SATA board that connects the media bays is clean, clear and sits directly behind the rear rotating fan for optimal ventilation.
This controller board connect with a secondary board inside that houses the memory and CPU components, as well as as other less notorious chips for network handling and even a dedicated small area of flash that houses the system software, DSM.
Not an enormous jump from the previous gen, but certainly a robust and reliable hardware architecture to begin storing your data. But what about the Synology software, and how the device manages your bits and bytes? This is not new and it is already fairly well understood by Synology NAS users that different tiers of Synology NAS hardware will result in slightly different DSM experience, see the video below to give you more of an idea:. A full software review of the DSM 6. Stay tuned. Ultimately, why buy a Ferrari if you just need something to do the weekly grocery shopping?
Shoot video with my dji mini 2 drone 4K 30fps and no matter what I do I can not get my to play to my 4K chromecast. How did h. Whoever says RAID1 is any faster is not correct. The exact same data is copied on each disk for redundancy. RAID0 is faster and can be almost exactly 2x as quick with two drives but if one drive fails all data is lost. Great review! For those new to this, deciding to get one or not: I got one a couple of weeks ago.
My first NAS. Completely worth it. I saw many who had trouble with slow speeds who only had about mbit speed connection. It was almost useless for them. Very important this. What gives? Does this limitation only come into play for transcoding? Try one more proof read, several errors in first paragraph alone. Skip to content. All this said, for a dual core NAS with just 2GB of memory, DSM runs to a surprisingly high degree and pretty much the entire library of Synology First Party applications are available to download from the app center no additional cost.
First Party Apps. If you're in the market for value, pick up the DSj. The DSj may not be as robust, but you're getting a much better value here. So if you're not looking for a powerful option and want a NAS that handles the basics, the DSj is the better option.
The NAS is particularly well-suited to first-time buyers, so if you want to get a sense of what the software has to offer and take a look at the feature set, the DSj is a great choice. The internal hardware is robust, and you just get that much more headroom for features like 4K transcoding. At the end of the day, you're getting a great NAS regardless of whatever model you end up choosing.
Remember, you'll also have to buy hard drives to slot into either NAS, which adds to the overall cost. Mainstream choice. There are more software features here than you'll end up using, and with up to 32TB of storage, you should be able to accommodate your entire media collection on the NAS. Amazing value.
