Chess hustlers are players who compete at the chess board for money. Most of them can be seen hanging out in parks, mainly in New York City. Some may talk a ton of trash, cheat and play for small amount of money, while there are others that actually make a good income from the game.
While gambling in chess is technically illegal, chess hustlers are largely ignored by legal authorities. In fact, some of these players across areas of New York city are heavily featured in popular newspaper articles and websites, giving them a unique brand of fame. So you might be asking, how much do chess hustlers really make? Well, that will mostly depend on the players level of skill. But do most hustlers make this amount of cash each day?
The amount of money you make from this type of sport will again depend on your skill, the number of tourists visitors, your location and the amount of work you put in. Success is not guaranteed. Most of them are usually class C or B players at best. What they excel at is 5 minute chess on their own turf, where they do everything they can to distract you. Quite frequently, they make illegal moves and badger you with commentary. These hustlers have a goal of how much money they wish to make in a single day.
If you are a class C player in your local club, then you stand a chance. However, you should keep a few things in mind when playing against chess hustlers:. Play a stout, mistake-free chess opening. These chess hustlers love a pawn advantage in an endgame with 1 minute left on the clock. They make their money pushing wood!
They ache for you to make one tactical mistake. Avoid tactical engagements unless you know you can come out on top. Every move is about frustrating them. Just let them come to you. Be tactically brilliant. They are, so you need to be as well. They will make a mistake. Spot it. Exploit it. That sounds simple, and it kind of is. They usually only will play 2 games with me.
This may be considered cheating if you are in a winning position and are about to win the wager. I have to say that the majority of chess hustlers do NOT cheat. It just seems like they wouldnt be profiting if they were that low. But this was back in the 80s. Don't know what it's like now. I played three hustlers at Washington Square Park. I beat two of them. They played like ers. The one I lost to told me he had an Elo of Even though these players are beatable, they often trash talk and cheat in order to increase their chances of winning. Some of the hustlers even have a temper, for example, in the video above one of them pushes the clock off of the table in a time scramble.
Come on, that can't be true. It takes hours of study a day, a large opening repertoire, good understanding of opening, middle game, and endgame, and plenty of practice against really good players or coaches to be a GM.
If Paul Morphy couldn't make it to GM strength, then bullcrap that random hustlers in parks can be GMs without coaches or consistent study habits. You were careful to say that it was at blitz and not slow time controls, and the GMs mentioned are not necessarily strong blitz GMs, but even still. Those stories have to be made up.
Blitz is not the same as normal chess You can even see some blitz untitled players here recking GMs. Everything I've heard from multiple sources converging on a pretty consistent conclusion seems to indicate they are usually around , with a few hovering around If you get to USCF, you should be able to hold your own, and at , you'll be able to defend yourself against them quite well.
One area they have an advantage is just being utterly and completely comfortable in their environment. You and I are comfortable playing in our nice homes in a chair at a computer, or a well regulated tournament setting. With them, you'll be playing in a chaotic environment on a shitty board with shitty pieces place all askew on the board and off kilter on the squares, noise, people watching, talking going on, distractions, weird, bizarre openings, playstyles and variables. If you are both , you'd have to add in at least pts advantage to the hustler just for environmental and psychological comfort They play thousands of these games, daily, for years.
